Derbyshire Landscapes Show - Starts 16th April

On Saturday 16th April the Derbyshire Landscape Show starts at Gallery top in Rowsley Derbyshire. The exhibition will feature the paintings of six Derbyshire based landscape artists, including me!

Two of the the painters in this group exhibition are Colin Halliday and Kristan Baggaley. I have been a fan of their work since I started painting. Its been a lot of hard work over the past 6 years (when I started) but I am really pleased to have my efforts recognised and to be sharing equal billing with two artists who I admire.

For more details see

A selection, all but one of the paintings I will be showing are below.

Lights on a dashboard

The can be something very beautiful about the "mundane". Even in an urban setting there is more beauty as a picturesque vista, its just a question of finding it. A few weeks back I took these photos as I was getting out of my car. The first is just street light in the rain through windscreen wipers, I love the painterly smearing and distortion of the lights.. The second almost looks like lepoard-skin but is the pattern caused by the light shining through a windscreen covered in raindrops.

Life through the bottle

No I haven't turned to drink just yet. But I was fascinated when I picked up a washing liquid bottle and realised that it might have some strange effects. I'd like to point out that I didn't try and drink it :-) I used the washing liquid in motion as a camera filter, holding my camera up against the body of the bottle. Focussing was thrown out for most of the image but I really enjoyed the effects that it produced. Maybe if you drink enough Absinthe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe) this is what you see?

Moon Moor and Sea: 22nd May 2010

Saturday 22nd May was the opening of my exhibition at the Tarpey Gallery. It was lovely sunny evening but despite the fine weather we had plenty of visitors. I was particularly pleased to see some new faces amongst the crowd.

As you can see the Tarpey Gallery is wonderful light airy space with large walls that really bring out the best in the paintings. I'd like to thank everybody that attended.

Some of the paintings are still available so do let me know if you are still interested in seeing any of the paintings that might be left.

Sunrise Through Condensation

Sometimes its the little things that catch your eye. Couldn't help noticing the beauty in the drips of condensation running down the window at sunrise the other morning. Perfect.

Peak District - Landscape Paintings

Thought you might like to see what I'm upto at the moment. I recently completed the the following paintings and they will be available end of May through Derbyshire Open Arts. Painted these in a confident mood with big bold strokes and resisted the temptation to overwork them, always a temptation.

Derby Open Entries

Its that time of the year already, Derby Open is an annual painting and sculpture competition. I have entered for the past three years, getting entries in the first and third years. Some people get in every year some people try for years without success.

Anyhow here are the two paintings I'm submitting.

Wish me luck :-)

New Sculpture - "Hot line to the Hereafter"

Thought you might be interested in my new sculpture "Hotline to the Hereafter"

A modified intercom from early 20th century. Visually reinvented with "modern" technological touches to give a hint that this might be an object from an alternative history*. The red light winks rapidly when the device is in standby. On lifting the hand-piece from the cradle the connecting lead base glows orange and the listener is presented with purely random white-noise. An Atheist riposte in an increasingly religious world.

* maybe the Steampunk literary genre

Will be on show at Gallery-s (UK)(http://www.gallery-s.co.uk/) 4th March for 4 weeks.
