Life through the bottle

No I haven't turned to drink just yet. But I was fascinated when I picked up a washing liquid bottle and realised that it might have some strange effects. I'd like to point out that I didn't try and drink it :-) I used the washing liquid in motion as a camera filter, holding my camera up against the body of the bottle. Focussing was thrown out for most of the image but I really enjoyed the effects that it produced. Maybe if you drink enough Absinthe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe) this is what you see?

Derwent Gallery Exhibition - Starts 4th September 2010

I'm really pleased to announce that my next (solo) exhibition starts at Derwent Gallery in Grindleford on Saturday 4th September for 4 weeks. The landscape exhibition will feature all new work produced this year including some very recent paintings - painted in the last week or two!

Saturday 22nd May was the opening of my exhibition at the Tarpey Gallery. It was lovely sunny evening but despite the fine weather we had plenty of visitors. I was particularly pleased to see some new faces amongst the crowd.



As you can see the Tarpey Gallery is wonderful light airy space with large walls that really bring out the best in the paintings. I'd like to thank everybody that attended.

The pressure as an exhibition approaches

This month I have been hard at work trying to produce some good paintings for the exhibition in May. As an exhibition deadline gets nearer I tend to go into overdrive producing many paintings to select from. For every painting I am happy with there are at least a couple along the way that get painted over or reworked to the extent that there is nothing left of the original.

Sunrise Through Condensation

Sometimes its the little things that catch your eye. Couldn't help noticing the beauty in the drips of condensation running down the window at sunrise the other morning. Perfect.

After quite a rest over the summer I have started painting in earnest again. Below are two moorland landscapes and a seascape. I will be entering Derby Open again this year with a sculpture, a an abstract painitng and a seascape. I will put them up on the blog later in the week.

Charity Art Auction

I have donated two of my paintings to a charity art auction run by the excellent artist Kaine Kulczak. There will be some fantastic art available from a range of artists.

Derbyshire Open Arts: 23rd -25th May

Derbyshire Open Arts was an enjoyable weekend. We were a little apprehensive as the weather was very good. Sunday was the quietest day due to the glorious sunshine (dammit!) Still over the weekend we had over 230 visitors. Painting in the gallery window was not as scary as I expected and people took great interest in what I was painting and how I was painting it. One real surprise was the encouraging comments about my Face-a-Day books. With this I am planning to sketch a face a day for the whole of 2009. The faces are sort of doodles and often represent my current state of mind, some are grumpy and some are happy!

Thanks to everybody that attended, bought paintings and visited to show support. In some cases all three!

Stormy Weather

I really enjoy this time of year.  There is enough light now for some breathtaking cloud patterns but also stormy skies and fast moving winds to keep the landscape constantly changing. Managed to capture this wonderful moment the other day as a storm passed over Allestree/Kedleston area late afternoon.  This pattern of clouds didn't last long and I waited until the sun came through before snapping this one. The photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called this the "decisive moment"

Derbyshire Landscape: Work in progress

A burst of activity produced this one today.  I was getting frustrated with other paintings and tried to not to try too hard, this oftens results in better paintings!

Paintings with Colour!

Well ok they all have colour in, but these ones are a bit brighter than normal. I find using colour in this saturated quite scary. I'm reading about NLP at the moment and the use of saturated colour or black and white images is a way of intensifying or reducing a mental image and assocaited emotion. What does that say about me eh? Thats enough of the psychology!

Moors and Moonlight Exhibition - Photos

Moors and Moonlight runs until 5th October
This exhibition runs until 5th October at Derwent Gallery in Grindleford (www.derwentgallery.com). This is my biggest exhibition to date and I will be showing over 20 new paintings. Some of the paintings in the Derbyshire Life article will be featured in the exhibition.

Derbyshire Life: Article

The September Issue of Derbyshire Life includes a four page article interview and pics of my paintings. Ashley Franklin and the team have done a great job on producing a superb article, the choice of pictures is great and I'm pleased to say that he went for the dark ones :-) In newsagents now £2.40 article on page 152. Low res pics below.

Breeze, Chaos Theory and new painting

Sat out in the garden this afternoon reading all about Chaos Theory (its not all art!). Great breeze in the trees at the end of the garden.

Here is my latest painting, been working on this for a week or two and tweaking it. Its called Peak Hill Mist #2, inspired by elements of both the Peak District and Welsh landscape. I'm not selling it just yet, hoping to enter it into an upcoming exhibition/open art competition

Success - Derbyshire Open Arts

This weekend was Derbyshire Open Arts, where artists all over Derbyshire open their studios and show paintings to the public. I was displaying a selection of landscapes at the Little Gallery in Belper.

Over the weekend we had over 130 visitors and it was a great opportunity to explain techniques, materials and the motivation behind painting. I popped out on a couple of days at lunchtime to visit two very interesting artists.

Emma Simcock-Tooth paints hyper-realistic portraits, her choice of subjects is fascinating and her latest commision involves painting hoodies.

Lewis Noble produces landscapes in very expressive and abstract style and I have been a fan of his work for long time, it was nice to finally meet him in person.

As well as getting some good feedback about my work and chatting with people I also sold three original landscapes and a print, which is nice :-)
