Stormy Weather

I really enjoy this time of year.  There is enough light now for some breathtaking cloud patterns but also stormy skies and fast moving winds to keep the landscape constantly changing. Managed to capture this wonderful moment the other day as a storm passed over Allestree/Kedleston area late afternoon.  This pattern of clouds didn't last long and I waited until the sun came through before snapping this one. The photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called this the "decisive moment"

Website Update

I have updated my web site at http://garbleart.co.uk/

I decided on a simple clean one page approach which should load up quickly.  The new page has all the essential info and a grid with previews of nine of my paintings, clicking on this leads through to Minigallery for more information

• Finishing two fleshy sculptures whilst listening to st germain. Not the legendary immortal occult figure but the house/nu jazz musician;-)
  
• Listening to 'Black Celebration', Depeche Mode. Love the sinster noises @ start of title track. Superb album even after all these years.
  
• Today is Ada Lovelace day. She was the world's first programmer. She didn't drink Jolt cola or keep a selection of pens in her top pocket
  
• In the studio painting. Listening to 'telepopmusic - angel milk' . Window open spring air. Lovely.

• Joke: 'three fonts go into bar, the barman says sorry we don't serve your type here' ;-)
  
• Chilli. Red wine. Bread and butter pudding. Zombie massacre via house of the dead. Got to stay awake!!

What a cold start to the new year! I visited Harpur Hill near Buxton last weekend. Over night there had been freezing fog and everything above a certain height had been covered with the most beautiful white frost. Took a few pictures on a mobile phone camera, so quite grainy, hope it captures the moment, if not the freezing cold temperature :-) For more pictures click on the one below or click this link




Discovering Colour
Most of my output in the past has used a distinctive pallette limited to a narrow range of colours, much of this is deliberate as the colours match those of moorland and surround areas. I have recently been experimenting with some bold colours as the pictures below illustrate. To be honest I was quite taken aback when I had finished them. They seemed so bright, for me at least! I'd be really interested to hear your views, is too much colour too soon, or do you like this more saturated trend?

Triptych: Peak District Moorland

This is my first ever Triptych.  getting the three paintings to match up was quite a challenge but I was pleased with the result.

Winter Moon over Curbar Edge

Latest painting, I resisted the temptation to over develop this one and it took a surprisingly short time to finish, as always the moon was the hardest, its the edges! And it has to be sort of circular :-)

Derby Open Entries

Its that time of the year already, Derby Open is an annual painting and sculpture competition. I have entered for the past three years, getting entries in the first and third years. Some people get in every year some people try for years without success.

Anyhow here are the two paintings I'm submitting.

Moors and Moonlight Exhibition - Photos

Moors and Moonlight runs until 5th October
This exhibition runs until 5th October at Derwent Gallery in Grindleford (www.derwentgallery.com). This is my biggest exhibition to date and I will be showing over 20 new paintings. Some of the paintings in the Derbyshire Life article will be featured in the exhibition.

Derbyshire Life: Article

The September Issue of Derbyshire Life includes a four page article interview and pics of my paintings. Ashley Franklin and the team have done a great job on producing a superb article, the choice of pictures is great and I'm pleased to say that he went for the dark ones :-) In newsagents now £2.40 article on page 152. Low res pics below.

Derwent Gallery Exhibition: Autumn Exhibition

For a while now I have been working with the Derwent Gallery in Grindleford. Over the Christmas period they found collectors for several of my paintings, my 8x8 paintings are particularly popular.

Dramatic Moorland by moonlight, inspired by my the local Peak District but captures the spirit of moorland by night everywhere. I am drawn to moonlight walks and these inspire expressionist paintings such as this.

This is my largest painting to date and I will be offering this to a gallery mid January 2008

Moorland Painting - Commission/Present

This week I been working on a landscape painting for my sister inlaw. I offered her a painting for her recent birthday and she wanted one that represented the local landscape. She gave me some rock samples from her favourite place, described how she liked the place at dusk when the moon has a halo of light. So I took this and put through the buxton-landscape-filter! Here's the result. I am pleased with the effect. I will be taking around to her tomorrow. Hope she doesn't read this and see it before the unveiling!

Solo Exhibition Publicity - Derbyshire Life

Gallery-S have a big article in Derbyshire Life Magazine this month. I was interviewed for the feature but the editor ran out of room and so I have been promised some space in month's issue. At least I got the biggest paintings picture in the article, see below. Images kept low-res so if you really want to read the article you will need to buy the magazine!
